IT'S BEEN A WHILE
Do I know you from somewhere Why do you leave me wanting more Why do all the things I say Sound like the stupid things I said before Kiss me I'm dying Put your hand on my skin I close my eyes I need to make a connection I'm walking on a thin line I close my eyes I close my eyes Do I know you from somewhere? It's been a while. *** Upon venturing into Sino, guess what I found - A bootleg version of the Re-Invention Tour, recorded live in Paris!!! That really came as a nice surprise. It's a bootleg, but since there's no official DVD release date in sight, I'd snap it for sure.
Just watched it - it's actually not too bad, considering it's fan made. Although that person might not be the cleverest handheld video camera user - I salute his/her perseverance and determination in holding the cam so steadily throughout the 2 hour show. Damn those occasional heads blocking the view but I can't blame them can I.
1. It's actually quite a brilliant show, as they say it was.
2. Set list is alright, and is much better than Drowned World - at least they dropped all the boring 'Music' numbers like Paradise, Nobody's Perfect, or Ray Of Light's Mer Girl. They chose the awesome 'Bedtime Stories' and 'Hollywood' as interludes - not bad.
3. Vogue's the perfect opening song. But I wonder why this particular song has to be lip synched just like for her previous tours.
4. Highlights of the show - Vogue, American Life (awesome choreography), Express Yourself (she HAS to do this number), Like A Prayer (fave song), Papa Don't Preach (nice surprise there), Music (hottest moment of the show), and the perfect closing song Holiday (make this a tradition, please).
So you can say they succeeded in picking the perfect opening and closing numbers.
5. I don't know about other fans, but I don't really enjoy seeing Madge with her guitar. I mean, nobody expects her to be a brilliant guitar player anyway. She can manage those chords for sure, but then I'd rather see her bounce on stage and show us some moves rather than standing there with her guitar pretending to be a rock chick, which she obviously isn't, yet.
6. Show is divided into 5 segments. One segment is too long - with 5 songs, and the opening segment too short - with only 3 songs. And I have to say the opening segment is the best looking one - she looks fabulous in that corset, everything looks glamorous just like a Madge show should.
7. Deeper and Deeper is included, which is wonderful in a way, but I'd rather see it performed as a dance number. I hate it when artists rearrange a dance number and make it a ballad. What is that for? Deeper and Deepr IS a dance number. Making it slow doesn't make it any more exciting. This version is not anywhere near bad or awful though.
8. 'Imagine' can be left out, seriously. I know she's trying to put forth that 'stop the war' message but she really can leave that out and sing her own song instead when she's only doing a 20 song set.
9. Isn't it odd there's no encore? Encore is a must. Although it's a full 2 hour production, an encore makes everyone happier leaving the venue. Especially when she's charging like 150 Pounds for premium seat tickets. It's really weird actually.
10. The concert utilizes too much of those video screens. I mean, the visual effects/videos projected are fine, but it makes the whole thing looks kinda bland/ordinary. Everyone's doing that lately.
So overall I think it's a fantastic show with a good setlist. She combined her new American Life songs with old hits like Express Yourself, Deeper and Deeper, Material Girl, Papa Don't Preach etc. However in terms of theatrical presentation it doesn't match that of Drowned World. Drowned World had a boring setlist but in terms of theatrical presentation it was top notch. All the action and stage design/props made up for the less interesting songs. You can say Drowned World although doesn't satisfy fans due to the lack of old hits, it's one great show when it successfully combines theater with rock/pop. For Re-Invention she manages to do a bit of everything - dancing, singing live, playing the guitar, doing a few tricks that she hasn't done before, bringing a more political message, singing her old hits etc, but then it's just a bit of everything that you get. It's not the cohesive show with distinctive segments like Drowned World was, nor it was the fun shows that the Girlie Show/Blond Ambition were. But when they're putting some of her best songs with some really awesome choreography and stage props you can ever see in a concert, and she did successfully reinvent some of the old hits, it's impossible to not like this show.
And I don't want to have to see all those heads blocking my view again. Warner Videos, EVERYONE WANTS TO SEE THIS OUT ON DVD!!!!!!!!! It's about bloody time to release it!
